A Mommy’s Gotta Do What a Mommy’s Gotta Do: Christmas Trickery!

Dec. 23rd and so much to do still!!! I don’t know how this happened. We got most of our Christmas shopping done during Cyber Monday. I was so pumped to FINALLY be on top of things and ahead of schedule.

Here I am, 2 days before Christmas, still needing to get stocking stuffers and our Christmas Eve box items. Problem is, I have all 3 of my kids with me!

**********
So, tell me if your parents did this to you when you were a kid:

My mom would take us shopping for “other people”- her friend’s kids, my cousins, etc. She’d have us pick things out that WE liked. I remember being so jealous cause I picked great stuff and hoped she would take note and get it for me too. Lol.

Then here comes Christmas morning and all the stuff we picked out would be wrapped and waiting for is under the tree or in our stockings!

She tricked us!!!!!

Mom was able to pull this of for a few years (maybe 2-3), and then I finally got it. And then I got smart! I loved going shopping for “other people” then. I knew what she was doing and she was none the wiser. Lol! It was the best of both worlds- She got her shopping done and I got to pick what I wanted!
**********

This year, I will be doing this very thing. I have to. Since I haven’t done it in a few years, I don’t think Little Miss (8.5 yrs old) will catch on. But! She’s smart and very clever, so we’ll see.

Here’s to finishing up our last minute Must-Dos.

Tell me, what kind of trickery did your parents use on you for the holidays to get things done?

Are you kiddin’?!? My parents were the masters of merry magic at Christmastime! First of all, my frugal father wouldn’t even purchase a tree until the night before Christmas. We’d get the tree decorated while listening to and singing Christmas carols. Then, it was off to bed for my brother and me. And not a creature was stirring because we didn’t want “Santa” to catch us awake and peeping for fear he’d change his mind and skip our house altogether. Then, miraculously on Christmas morning, when we came bounding down the stairs around six o’clock, the tree scarf and the area surrounding the tree was full of gifts. What a sight! And what still puzzles me to this day is where our parents hid everything until the night before Christmas. I got an inadvertent clue from my super-savvy-shopper mom several years ago, who usually finishes her Christmas shopping during the Labor Day weekend and puts everything in storage until the Christmas season. Hmmm. Now that I think about it, it’s more about mastery than trickery. You get better with time!

My mom was master of hiding gifts as well. I was able to get around that… I found many gifts. I was so nosey! LOL.

What I was not able to figure out was how she was able to make miracles happen with our extremely tight income. Our Christmases were always AMAZING! This is something that I am still trying to learn and ask her about often.
